Zarafa Camp

Zarafa Camp is an intimate, four tented suite camp located on the private Selinda Reserve in northern Botswana, an area linking the Okavango Delta and the Chobe/Savute corridors. Few camps rival the location of this little gem, which together with Duba Plains and Selinda Camps, is one of only three Relais & Chateaux properties in Botswana. Overlooking the crystal waters of Zibadianja Lagoon, the source of the famous Savute Channel, every area of camp has a magnificent view. The lagoon is also the water source for a tremendous population of wildlife – dry season sightings boast buffalo and elephant by the hundreds.

This exquisite camp is the brainchild of the founders of Great Plains Conservation, who pooled their collective experience on safari to create what they deemed to be the best and most environmentally innovative camp. Only recycled hardwoods and canvas were used in the construction and all the camp’s electricity comes from its solar farm while ‘bio gas’ plants recycle waste into usable cooking gas. Zarafa Camp has no equal in terms of its environmental credentials and its careful appointments.

Selinda Reserve, at the crossroads of some of northern Botswana’s most prolific wildlife areas, boasts staggering wildlife populations year-round. Home to some of the classic species, such as leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo, Red lechwe, zebra and giraffe, it is also a refuge for some of the more uncommon species such as African wild dog (which usually den each dry season near camp), cheetah, roan and sable. And for birders, it will not disappoint. Our nearby African skimmer colony is a highlight, as are the antics of the Black egret on the shores of Zibadianja Lagoon. From camp, hippos are visible in the Lagoon and elephant wander through regularly. Night noises will either lull you to sleep or wake you from a deep slumber. It is an exciting area, and guests are in the heart of a wilderness wonderland.

Zannier Sonop

Zannier Sonop is a luxurious tented camp nestled at the Southern extremity of the Namib desert, in the Karas region. Designed as a refined British colonial experience from the 1920’s, this out-of-the-ordinary lodge offers a perfect retreat in a stunning panoramic desert landscape. Constructed on top of boulders, the ten spacious tents aim to offer a unique journey through time. Richly furnished with antiques made of fine materials, colourful carpets and precious wood, they are an invitation to live the life of yesteryear’s wealthy explorers. A sophistication that contrasts with the simplicity of the endless surroundings. At Zannier Sonop everything is orientated towards the desert’s richness: all views are awe-inspiring and a large list of adventures allow guests to admire the desert’s genuine beauty at leisure. Every evening guests are invited to enjoy an opulent gastronomic experience, where silverware and candelabras set the mood, enhanced by black-tie and white gloves service. Flawless service and attention to detail characterise all facilities of the camp.

Wolwedans Desert Lodge

Desert Lodge is perched on top of a dune plateau, overlooking panoramic vistas in all directions and capturing the beauty of the desert in a most memorable way. Building style is a combination of wooden structures and canvas blinds, opening up to the desert beyond.

The lodge reflects the ambience of a tented camp, but provides the comfort and protection of a permanent building. Each of the nine spacious chalets with en-suite bathrooms sports a private verandah, which connects you to vast stretches of untouched sand. Sleeping with your canvas blinds open is just like sleeping under the stars.

The main complex consists of two lounges, a number of sundowner decks, a fireplace, a tea deck, a library, the wine cellar and two dining rooms.

All communal areas of the lodge open out onto decks with superb views.

Wilderness Mombo

Highlights

  • Arguably the best year-round game-viewing destination in Botswana, with exceptional predator-prey sightings.
  • The annual inundation forms a natural barrier that confines the animals to Mombo’s private wilderness area, while the remarkable concentration of big cats during summer, when the prey species have their young, means that Mombo is rightly known as the ‘Place of Plenty’ for its all-year wildlife abundance.
  • Award-winning responsible-luxury safari camp in the heart of the magnificent Delta.

Destination: A beacon of conservation tourism, Wilderness Mombo leaves a light footprint in Botswana’s wild, wonderful Moremi Game Reserve. This part of the Okavango Delta is renowned for exceptional game viewing, particularly in summer when all manner of species congregate naturally here. With its mix of habitats attracting large herds, followed by predators in vast numbers and variety, discover why Mombo is truly the ‘Mother of all Camps’. Pristine floodplains, meandering channels and palm-fringed islands make up the Eden that is the Okavango Delta – a UNESCO World Heritage site where the water is so pure and clear, you can drink it.

Experience: Sightings at Wilderness Mombo are unparalleled. Encounter healthy populations of predators, sizeable elephant and buffalo herds and an abundance of ungulates. Close-up wildlife encounters in or near camp or at the hide are common, but nothing beats the thrill of out-of-camp game-viewing here – whether by vehicle or from a helicopter (additional costs apply).

Meals at Mombo are designed with conservation in mind, made with healthy ingredients sourced as locally as possible.

Days at Wilderness Mombo end with tranquil evenings on the deck and nights under the stars.

Purpose: On its private traversing area, Mombo has initiated a baobab conservation project after recognising the urgent need to protect these ancient trees. Twenty-six young trees are now protected here, with new saplings also under protection. The baobabs are fenced with log-piles and chicken wire mesh to allow the trees to recover and thrive.

Wildlife: The region around Wilderness Mombo is known as the ‘Place of Plenty’ by the local Bayei people. From big cats to never-ending herds of antelope, elephant and buffalo, massive concentrations of plains game and predators call this region of the Delta home. Sometimes, Africa’s rarer species reveal themselves, too. Catch a glimpse of a pangolin or honey badger, or the packs of wild dogs and cheetah coalitions that roam freely through the area. Over 400 species of birds flock to the Okavango Delta, including specials like the Pel’s fishing owl and endangered wattled cranes.

Wilderness Mombo: Rebuilt in 2018, our flagship camp maintains the spirit of the original African safari, and continues to garner numerous awards and accolades with its refurbishment. Repurposing original material and using added natural elements, with a minimal human footprint and 100% solar status, Wilderness Mombo has thoroughly maintained the integrity of its pristine surrounds.

Wild fig trees and mangosteens tower over the elevated guest tents – spacious canvas suites perched on wooden decks – positioned perfectly to watch the wildlife parade on the floodplain beyond.

NOTE: Wilderness Chikwenya is open seasonally between April and mid-November.

Wildlife: Mana Pools National Park lies at the heart of the Lower Zambezi Valley, a remote, beautiful place with spectacular views. The area is a compact concentration of scenic habitats (woodlands, floodplains, pans, islands and two iconic rivers) teeming with thrilling and diverse wildlife, where guests can look forward to spotting iconic wildlife – large herds of buffalos and elephants, kudu, Burchell’s zebras, waterbuck, impala and warthogs, and their predators, including lions, wild dogs, leopards, and cheetahs. Hippos and Nile crocodiles are abundant in and along the river.

Birdlife is superb with some 350 species recorded, including western banded snake eagle, rufous-bellied heron, long-toed lapwing, and the enigmatic Pel’s fishing-owl.

Wilderness Chikwenya: With its exceptionally beautiful location on the floodplains that sweep down to the broad Zambezi, and views onto the dazzling Rift Valley mountains beyond, Chikwenya is noted for exceptional sightings from ‘your armchair’ in camp – not only for the ever-present elephants and diverse bird species, but many plains game seen passing through – sometimes even followed by predators.

Tranquil and exquisite, Chikwenya’s seven elegant rooms (including two family units) are situated amongst shady albida trees – much loved by elephants, often seen feeding on tiptoe – and glorious Natal mahoganies.

The convivial lounge, dining and bar area offers a place of shared relaxation, while the sparkling pool, expansive deck and fireplace is an inviting space for quietly enjoying the scenery and passing wildlife.
