Shamwari Private Game Reserve is a premier safari and holiday destination in South Africa’s ecologically and culturally significant Eastern Cape Province.

Shamwari, meaning “my friend” in Shona, is the pinnacle of private game reserves and home to the coveted Big 5. Stretching over a vast, malaria free landscape, it offers an award-winning nature experience and is one of the largest private conservation initiatives in Southern Africa.

Shamwari is a place where guests can exist in harmony with nature, however fleeting the moment, where wildlife roam the landscape under the relentless African sun. Shamwari incorporates six lodges and one explorer camp; each one unique in its own essence. Lodges are designed in harmony with their surroundings where guests can experience nature in sublime comfort.

Riverdene offers 4 family rooms as exclusive units, swimming pool, supervised Kids Club, Toddler Play Area and a popular Kids Adventure Centre to ensure entertainment for the whole family. All four family rooms include a private safari vehicle for tailor made bush experiences for the whole family.

Mpala Jena

Mpala Jena is a boutique safari camp positioned along the beautiful tree-laden banks of the Zambezi River. The camp epitomizes ‘barefoot luxury’ with playfully scalloped thatched roofs, soft sand floors and a beach bar overlooking the pool and river. A cool, calming colour palette compliments light natural textures and sets the scene for slow, in-the-moment living. Our tented guest suites, nestled in the shade of large Sausage and Jackalberry trees are generously appointed with a private deck and outdoor bath and shower.

The camp is located within the 56,000-hectare Zambezi National Park, home to an ever-increasing number of wildlife species that can be enjoyed on safari drives, boat cruises, walking trails or even while sipping cocktails from the swing chairs in camp. Higher concentrations of buffalo and elephant are typical from June to October and the park is known for having more lions per km² than any other park in Zimbabwe. Birding is spectacular all year round with the highest diversity of species seen from November through to October. Catch and release fishing is a popular activity and peaks during Tiger fishing season between June and December.

Mpala Jena was created with a strong sustainability ethos and runs entirely off our solar plant and battery. Building materials and design elements were specified and sourced with a clear vision of minimizing embodied energy and transportation miles.

The camp is conveniently located 19 kilometres inside the Zambezi National Park, allowing easy access to Victoria Falls town by a 40-minute boat or road transfer. Mpala Jena also run guided tours of the Victoria Falls..

Mont Rochelle Hotel & Vineyard

Welcome to Mont Rochelle, a stunning 26 bedroom hotel and vineyard just under an hour’s drive from Cape Town in the town of Franschhoek in South Africa. Franschhoek is a traditional vineyard town in the Western Cape Province famously known as the French Corner of the Cape and is considered to be the food and wine capital of South Africa.

Escape to this picturesque corner of South Africa at the foot of the Klein Dassenberg Mountain Range for relaxation and a superb culinary experience accompanied by some outstanding wines.

The property is just under an hour’s drive from Cape Town and is within 35 minutes’ drive of the Stellenbosch, Paarl and Somerset West wine routes. We can arrange transfers either from the city or from Cape Town International Airport, or if you are coming by car it’s an easy drive to the property.

Cape Town International Airport serves destinations throughout South Africa and has direct connections to some of the key European and Middle East hubs, with flight times ranging from 10 to 12 hours. Flights from the US east coast take roughly 22 hours transiting via Johannesburg.

Don’t forget South Africa’s position in the southern hemisphere means the warmest months are from November to March, however the average daytime high rarely drops below 15°C/60°F. Many visitors to South Africa choose to combine a trip to the Cape-Region with a safari experience in the country’s northeast.

We recommend Ulusaba, our Private Game Reserve in the Sabi Sand Reserve. You will find that the weather in Ulusaba is often complimentary to the weather in Cape Town, meaning that you will get the best of both worlds. You can wake up for a morning game drive at Ulusaba and be at Mont Rochelle in time for pre-dinner drinks!

The grounds at Mont Rochelle cover 39 hectares (about 100 acres) and you’re welcome to go exploring.

A favourite activity for many of our guests is having a picnic on the estate – our kitchen can arrange a well-stocked picnic basket with a chilled bottle of wine (or two!). There are two restaurants, a cosy bar, a spa, a gym and a heated outdoor pool. That’s not forgetting a 37 hectare vineyard and wine .

Mont Rochelle has 26 rooms and suites. We have five different types of rooms including four Shiraz Rooms with king-size beds all featuring courtyard or valley views. Our six Merlot Rooms are larger than our Shiraz Rooms and also boast king-size beds with valley views. The six Cabernet Rooms include a private terrace overlooking the valley. There are also four even more spacious Pinotage Suites, which each feature a separate lounge and fantastic views. Finally, guests staying in our two largest rooms, our Cap Classique Suites, will enjoy a separate lounge area, a private terrace and their own plunge pool. Then there is four rooms and suites at The Manor House which is located close to the Vineyard and Country Kitchen. All rooms can be made up with twin beds on request. All rooms come with Africology branded bathroom amenities, tea and coffee facilities, a notepad and pen, postcards with stamps, laundry bag, a safety deposit box, hairdryer, a well-stocked minibar, plug adaptor and umbrella.

Children are very welcome to stay at Mont Rochelle year-round and we have some rooms which are able to accommodate children on single beds. We have children’s games plus a TV, DVD player and games console for extra entertainment. We do not operate a set programme but would be delighted to organise activities tailored to the needs of our younger visitors.

Baby-sitting can be arranged and a charge will apply but please advise at the time of booking if this may be required. Special food and beverages or simple snacks and light meals can be prepared according to your child’s tastes.
