Sanbona Wildlife Reserve | Gondwana Family Lodge

THE CAPE’S PREMIER WILDLIFE DESTINATION.

Sanbona is one of South Africa’s largest privately-owned nature reserves, stretching across 62 000 hectares of rich protected ecosystems within two biodiversity hotspots. Situated between the small, historic towns of Montagu and Barrydale, skirting the edge of the R62 highway. The reserve is bisected by the towering Warmwaterberg Mountain, characterised by sculpted 500 million-year-old Cape Fold Mountains. An area rich in culture, history, and heritage, and one of the world’s most biologically significant yet threatened regions. Sanbona aims to create a balance where critically important ecosystems, endangered wildlife and flora can prosper. Sanbona and the spirit of the San people welcomes you.

With views of the magnificent Anysberg Mountains and overlooking the Bellair Dam, Gondwana Lodge is the perfect sanctuary for family, friends and groups. This spacious thatched Lodge offers guests a sense of modern comfort with a touch of bush authenticity. Eco-Explorers programme offers educational and recreational wildlife experiences.

A range of experiences, including nature drives, guided nature walks, ancient rock art, and stargazing, create an unforgettable safari adventure. At the same time, Sanbona strives to emphasise and create awareness that true luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand without compromise. Through its unique non-profit ownership model, every stay contributes to conservation, community and positive impact.

Sable Alley

Not only is Khwai Private Reserve one of Botswana’s best kept secrets, it’s also home to the lovely Sable Alley. Sable is a piece of light, bright and beautiful luxury amid the game-rich floodplains of Khwai, and the best news is that it’s as sustainable as it is sophisticated. We’ve partnered with the local communities in Khwai, and proceeds from staying at Sable Alley go straight back into the Khwai Village community projects.

And what about the wildlife? Located right on the banks of a lily-covered lagoon, home to harrumphing hippo and a favourite drinking spot for elephant and buffalo, the big game quite literally comes to you at Sable. But as tempting as it is to stay in camp, venture out you should, for Khwai offers one of Africa’s greatest and most exclusive safari experiences. Have your binos at the ready for lion, leopard, wild dog, buffalo, elephant and hundreds of dainty antelope as you drive through the diverse landscapes.
We recommend booking Sable Alley as part of a complete Natural Selection safari, but if you want to book it separately or just check availability click on the button below.

Rhino Safari Camp

Rhino Safari Camp is a small (only 8 rooms) stylish safari camp set in a wild and remote area on the shores of Lake Kariba within the Matusadona National Park .

The Park is managed by African Parks, a well known international non-profit conservation organization that manages national parks and protected areas across Africa in partnership with governments and local communities.

Rhino offers an immersive bush experience for travelers seeking more than just luxury accommodation.

This intimate, unfenced, low-impact camp is perfect for those who value authenticity, a deep connection with nature, and the thrill of the wild — all without sacrificing comfort.

Blending rustic charm with thoughtful design, Rhino Camp provides a stylish yet down-to-earth safari atmosphere.

Tailored for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers, the camp offers guided game drives, walking safaris, boat cruises, fishing, unforgettable sundowners and rare up-close encounters with the iconic flora and fauna of the Matusadona National Park and Lake Kariba.

Whether you’re gathered around the campfire under a sky filled with stars, or watching elephants roam through the Boma or between the chalets, Rhino Camp delivers the magic of Africa in its purest form.

Camp is totally unfenced and as such, the wildlife frequents the camp by day and night; elephant, lion and leopard are regular visitors; as a result, we tend not to accept bookings for families with children under the age of twelve.

A double story central boma area for enjoying meals; sunsets; sunrises; lake views and frequent visits from elephants. The shady communal area faces the shoreline and is a perfect spot to watch the elephant families moving around the concession; at dusk the fire pit welcomes guests until the drums call for dinner.

Open-fronted elevated; wooden thatched; twin or double bedded; en-suite bedroom chalets follow the shoreline overlooking the untamed African wilderness, while warm hospitality and the natural soundtrack of the bush create a truly memorable stay. The chalets have been built like the BaTonga palafitta, (traditional stilted huts on mopane poles), for natural ventilation during the summer days and as a protection from animals, Zambezi floods and humidity.

Thanks to its unique features, Rhino can easily be combined with a more traditional African lodge or a tented camp.

Rhino offers a genuine safari experience; it is ideal for those who are looking for a real African camp experience, in the bush with style and all the comforts.
