Chikunto Safaris

Chikunto Safaris is a superb new boutique luxury Lodge/Camp located on an amazing site within the world-renowned South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. Itself recognised as one of Africa’s premier National Parks and often described ‘The Real Africa’. Known as the ‘Valley of the Leopard’ and famous for its high density of game and the absence of high-volume game-viewing traffic it is a huge bonus to actually be based inside the park itself.

Chikunto was built with the assistance of local villagers from the rural Mfuwe area, under the guidance of the German/Swiss owners, and is renowned for its game-rich location, the quality of its Guiding and the superb food it consistently delivers. The close bond with the local Community has been retained, with many of the locals involved with the original construction being re-trained and continuing to work as part of the ‘Chikunto Family’.

This not only gives back to the local Community, but also helps to ensure the next level of customer service.

With 5 spacious luxury Tented Suites (including 1 x Honeymoon Suite and 1 x Two Bedroomed Family Suite) it never feels crowded at Chikunto. Having said that, the extra-large firepit provides an ideal space around which you can gather for a pre-Dinner drink or two and discuss some of the day’s sightings. For those of you that might be thinking of travelling with family or a few friends the option of Exclusive Use is becoming increasingly popular, with small photo-specialist groups coming on a regular basis (note that there are also 2 x additional Guide Rooms)

The spacious main area is set under a large thatch roof, and incorporates reception, dining area, a well-stocked bar and a relaxing lounge area with an eclectic mix of African and European-style furniture – with some stunning black & white animal photography from the well-respected photographer, Patrick Bentley.

The property is built on raised decking that helps from both a security point of view (it is in the middle of a National Park, after all!) and helps make the most of the stunning views directly out to the Luangwa River. It is quite possible that the backdrop to your alfresco dining could a family of elephants making their way down to river to drink, whilst you listen to the sounds of the bush.

Whilst the game-viewing is clearly likely to be one of the highlights of your stay (helped by the option of the Night Drives that maximise your chances of seeing one or more of the Leopard in the vicinity) your stay at Chikunto really gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the sights, the sounds and even the smells of the African bush.

The heated salt-water swimming pool (no chlorine) has a counter-current system for those who wants to do some exercise and provides for some amazing photo opportunities for those that are so inclined.

There is an amazing, elevated Stargazing/Sleepout Platform, and this 6-meter-high platform provides stunning views over the Luangwa River and up to the African sky. The platform has its own private shower and bathroom facilities and provides the opportunity to have a private sundowner and dinner on the deck before falling asleep to the glow of the stars and the sounds of the African bush. Waking up to the dawn chorus and the sight of a herd of puku or impala directly beneath you is an extra special experience.

New for the 2026 Season is the super-spacious 2-bedroomed Chikunto Nthawi House, The House of Time. This villa will be available for private bookings from August 2026 and will be a fantastic option for 4 friends travelling together, for families looking for some extra space or for couples looking to really treat themselves to a ‘home away from home’ experience.

Pioneering the silent safari and driving a singular approach to renewable energy in hospitality in the wild, Cheetah Plains is a carbon negative lodge of unrivalled quality, committed to delivering an exceptional eco-luxury safari experience of the highest standards in South Africa’s most celebrated wildlife area, the Sabi Sand.

WILDLIFE CONSERVATION

Cheetah Plains’ prime location delivers a prolific safari experience facilitated by the natural movement of wildlife over this vast land, fiercely protected under conservation and actively monitored. We strive to minimise our environmental footprint while contributing to the green economy.

Sabi Sand Nature Reserve exists to protect, preserve and promote a remarkable part of the Greater Kruger National Park’s open ecosystem. We’re committed to the sustainable management of this pristine wilderness area and to working with our community partners to create meaningful opportunities.

CARBON NEGATIVE CONSERVATION

Leading the way in the Sabi Sand, Cheetah Plains has partnered with some of the world’s most pre-eminent minds in the renewable energy field to provide clean energy solutions that drive both our hospitality and safari experiences.

All of our guest accommodation, three villas and twelve private guest suites, operate entirely off grid.

Harnessing only the power of solar to provide a reliable, renewable energy source, Cheetah Plains sits in a carbon-negative scenario. The offsets, largely from conversion to solar combined with the relatively small number of beds, play a significant role in creating our positive position.

By staying at Cheetah Plains, guests can off-set part of their footprint.

ELECTRIC SAFARI VEHICLES

Our twice-daily game drives are led by best-in-class safari guide and tracker teams and taken in our innovative Land Cruiser Electric Safari Vehicles. This bold advance toward zero-emission game viewing is what drives our sustainable safari experience at Cheetah Plains.

These vehicles drive on average 32,000 kilometres (19,884 miles) a year while producing zero carbon emissions.

The average 4×4 travelling the same distance would emit over 7,000 kilogrammes (15,432 pounds) of CO2.

THE ULTIMATE SUSTAINABLE SAFARI EXPERIENCE IN SOUTH AFRICA

The adoption of electric vehicles powered by solar energy together with our recycling initiatives from water to waste management effectively mitigates more than 581 tonnes (640 tons) of CO2 emissions annually. To put it into perspective, this reduction is equivalent to the environmental impact of over 20,000 trees.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

By developing a solar plant which includes the installation of 1205 solar PV panels on the rooftops, as well as three Dual-axis PV solar trackers which follow the sun for the optimal input, our total solar installation generates an average of 550MWh per annum which is an offset of approximately 530 Tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum.

ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT

Part of a community waste management initiative, the lodge waste is divided and collected bi-weekly by a local community operative that makes a living in re-using, recycling and upcycling materials.

In 2023 Cheetah Plains is facilitating a community knitting project to educate and upskill ladies in the area to knit beanies and scarves for Shari’s boutique.

CULTURAL HERITAGE

Discover Shangaan culture though a guided visit to the local village of Utah to learn about the rich heritage of one of South Africa’s diverse tribes through traditions that weave the history of the land and environment through their customs.

GRASS ROOTS EDUCATION

Committed to community upliftment and creating local employment we constructed the Lezagwa Utah Community Crèche in 2019. This facility supports the employment of teachers and assistants that care for over 60 children between 6 months and 5 years old and is the main centre of area for local early childhood development.

We actively fundraise for special projects and initiatives that will improve the facility.

Direct donations are channelled and documented for those who wish to support. In 2023 these projects include security fencing, the purchase of a photocopy machine and educational materials.

Chamabondo Tented Camp – Zambezi National – Victoria Falls

Your Serene Sanctuary in the Wilderness

Discover comfort at Chamabondo Tented Camp. Our 12 spacious tents offer a blend of elegance and authentic safari living. Each boasts a King size bed (or 2 x Three Quarter Beds), modern ensuite bathroom, and a private deck for wildlife viewing. Experience the perfect balance of comfort and adventure in the heart of the Zambezi Nature Park.

Chacma Bush Camp

Chacma Bush Camp, enviably located deep within the heart of the lesser-known Maseke Balule Game Reserve in the Greater Kruger, offers the perfect big five safari experience in 8000 hectares of undulating landscapes dotted with rocky outcrops. This family-friendly camp sleeps a total of 10 people, and thus offers an authentic and intimate safari experience close to the Olifants River. Deep caves on the traverse with flecks of mica make for a unique geology and game drives traverse over these diverse landscapes.

The camp’s perimeter is hugged by Mopane woodlands which are a major drawcard for a wealth of wildlife. Elephants, bushbuck, kudu and plains game are commonly spotted in these woodlands, and can be viewed from the comfort of the deck area surrounding the sparkling swimming pool. There’s a natural waterlogged area in front of camp which provides wildlife with the much needed replenishment needed during the heat of the day.

Evening times are spent swapping stories around the roaring campfire in the boma area, and dinners are spent indulging in traditional cuisine in the rustic lapa.

Enjoy daily game drives in this 8000 hectare reserve, and special excursions such as sundowners, bush breakfasts at the river and star gazing can be arranged.

Cape Vulture Nature Reserve

At Cape Vulture Lodge, our name means everything. We are dedicated to the conservation of more than 728 breeding pairs of Cape vultures nesting on the cliffs of the Northern Drakensberg Escarpment that towers above us. Their feathers form our logo and their protection underpins our ethos of sustainable, responsible tourism.

The lodge has been built with the breathtaking views and our resident vultures in mind. Each of our nine tented suites is positioned to make the most of the dramatic landscapes and afford great sightings of these majestic birds of prey as they soar effortlessly above the 1800ha Cape Vulture Conservancy – our slice of African wilderness just 26km from the South African safari capital of Hoedspruit, in the heart of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Reserve.

From concept to completion, Cape Vulture Lodge has been developed to support the conservation of our local environment, education of our local community and employment within the local economy. It’s a commitment to sustainability which goes to the very heart of everything we do and which we love sharing with our guests. When you visit Cape Vulture Lodge you know your stay is going to have direct benefit for the protection of fauna and flora and for local people in the communities on our doorstep.

In terms of our environment, the goal is for the lodge to be 95% self-sustainable in the very near future, which means not only going solar, but recycling all water, efficiently managing waste, eliminating single-use plastics and environmentally unfriendly chemical products. Instead, we are using renewable and recyclable products, growing most of the food needed in our local permaculture garden and are planning to produce a complete range of natural products, such as soaps, candles, oils, insect repellents and much, much more, which will be available for our guests to purchase.

On arrival you will be welcomed by our friendly team. You will then be guided through the spacious main lodge and its expansive viewing decks where you will discover the meaning of “escape”. The spacious in- and outdoor areas is where you will be served with deliciously homemade meals while enjoying the breath-taking views of the Manutsa Mountains (Northern part of the Drakensberg). We have a sparkling pool and sun loungers that will make the most of the African sunshine while spending your time unwinding. While relaxing on one of the decks you might have the opportunity to see the distinctive silhouettes of the Cape Vultures that call this beautiful place home.  In the evenings, a sunken boma around a crackling fire is the ideal place for endless stories of the bush, while enjoying a refreshing beverage from our fully stocked bar.

All these combined forms the beating heart of Cape Vulture Lodge.

A stay at Cape Vulture Lodge gives you the opportunity to explore the African wilderness in a variety of ways. Whether it’s hiking in the foothills of the Manutsa mountains, mountain biking along a network of trails or discovering the secrets of the bush on a guided drive, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to things to do for the whole family. Our Conservancy is also home to a variety of plains game, from wildebeest, kudu, zebra, giraffe, and many more. Take a tour through our very own permaculture garden and see where we harvest most of our fresh produce from. You can also learn more about how you can incorporate some of these principles to your environment and daily life.

We will happily assist in arranging trips and excursions to nearby places of interest. Tour the spectacular Panorama Route or go on a Big 5 Safari Tour. Visit the nearby town of Hoedspruit with its vibrant art galleries, curio shops, restaurants and cafés. Take a relaxing boat cruise on the Blyde Dam, which is the third largest canyon and the greenest canyon in the world. Horseback riding and scenic helicopter flights over the majestic mountains, are also just a few worth mentioning.
