Campi ya Kanzi

Campi ya Kanzi – “Camp of the Hidden Treasure” – sits in Kenya’s Chyulu Hills between Amboseli and Tsavo West National Parks. We’re the only safari camp, with our Chyulu Lodge, across 400 square miles of pristine Maasai wilderness, with unobstructed views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

What makes us different:

This isn’t lodge-as-spectator tourism. We pioneered regenerative safari operations: conservation-funded, Maasai-owned and operated, genuinely sustainable. Edward Norton, actor and UN Goodwill Ambassador for Biodiversity, serves as President of our US Board. National Geographic recently featured Edward in their “33 Most Relevant People” issue.

The experience:

Private guided safaris with professional Maasai guides who grew up in these hills. Walking safaris among wildlife – no vehicle barriers, no park restrictions. Game drives in whisper-quiet electric vehicles: our Electric Land Rover Defender and the world’s first Rivian R1T safari truck, both solar-powered. Horseback riding. Scenic flights over the Chyulu volcanic landscape.

Because we operate outside national park boundaries, we offer what confined lodges cannot: freedom to walk, night drives, off-road exploration, and genuine immersion in working Maasai ranchland where wildlife and pastoralists coexist.

Sustainability credentials:

First Kenyan lodge to earn Gold Eco-Rating from Ecotourism Kenya. Winner: Tourism for Tomorrow Award, Eco-Warrior Award, Condé Nast World Savers Award. Certified Global Ecosphere Retreat. 2026 Uncharted Safari Award.

100% solar energy. Rainwater harvesting. Complete water recycling. Zero fossil fuel game drives. We don’t just minimize impact – we fund conservation across 1.2 million acres through the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust.

The operation:

Six luxury tented cottages and two tented suites accommodate 16 guests maximum. Italian-African fusion cuisine (our founders are Italian-Kenyan). Full board. 70 Kenyan employees, all from local communities.

The Maasai aren’t props for your photos – they own this operation, guide your safaris, cook your meals, and share their home with you.

The setting:

Hemingway called these the “Green Hills of Africa.” Ancient volcanic landscape, lava caves, springs that flow year-round. Elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, wild dogs. Kilimanjaro dominates the horizon.

Hiking the Chyulu ridgeline at sunrise with a Maasai guide, Kilimanjaro turning pink across the valley, no other humans for miles – that’s the experience we offer.

This is what safari was meant to be before it became industrialized.

Camelthorn Lodge

This flag ship lodge is nestled in a patch of pristine woodland just west of Ngamo on the edge of the South Eastern corner of Hwange National Park. The lodge is a true partnership with the surrounding community and was built on their land and almost everyone that works for us there comes from the local community nearby.

The lodge is unique in its style and design and has as its centre piece a huge ancient Camelthorn tree. On the edge of the Ngamo Plain, and strategically placed to explore the remote and unspoilt south eastern portion of the park, Camelthorn will also provide a spectacular wilderness experience. Less than a kilometre away from the lodge we have built an underground blind in front of a beautifully located waterhole in the park. Camouflaged as a termite heap and buried under an ancient Mitswiri tree – the photographic opportunities from it are dramatic. Elephants can be photographed from toe level silhouetted against the sky at a distance of 25 feet – and such close proximity to Hwange’s huge bulls is honestly breath-taking.

Baobab Ridge Private Lodge

Baobab Ridge Lodge is a private lodge situated in the prestigious Klaserie Private Nature Reserve. It provides spacious yet affordable air-conditioned individual private suites with an open plan lounge and private terrace, offering guests beautiful bush-veld landscapes with an excellent possibility of coming face to face with the “Big 5” and bird species in their natural habitat.
This lodge is fully catered and can also be booked exclusively for up to 16 guests (ideal for groups seeking complete privacy and no age limits).

The Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, one of the largest private reserves in South Africa (approximately 62 000 hectares) is part of the Greater Kruger National Park and open to the Kruger National Park and Timbavati Private Nature Reserve. The private game reserve lies along the western border of the Kruger, with no fencing separating the reserve from the Kruger or the Timbavati; allowing the animals to roam freely between the private game reserves and the Kruger Park. The game in both the Kruger and the neighbouring reserves is essentially the same, the only difference to the Kruger being the experience of driving off-road in open game viewers with professional guides. The less known Klaserie Reserve also has fewer lodges, which means far less traffic on game drives and sightings.
